Peter & the Wolf
Saturday, September 26, 2009
(Saturday, September 25, 2010)

How can anyone resist the oogity-boogity excitement of a mischievous wolf in his
attempts to outwit a clever boy in the classic tale of Peter and the Wolf?  Music,
drama and an instrument petting zoo are all part of a unique collaboration of local
artists gathering together on Saturday, September 26, 2 p.m. for an afternoon of
delightful entertainment at the Washington Center in Olympia. Hands On Children’s
Museum will be providing a craft activity and representatives from Wolf Haven
International, a local wolf sanctuary, will be there to answer questions about
wolves.

Peter and the Wolf, written for narrator and orchestra, is the 1936 work of Russian
composer Sergei Prokofiev. The father of two young sons, Prokofiev wrote the
story and composed the music to be especially enjoyable to children as it
introduces them to the sounds of orchestral instruments. Each character in the
story is represented by a particular instrument and children of all ages have great
fun listening for the characters.

Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia (SOGO), directed by John Welsh, will
provide the musical piece. In addition to Peter and the Wolf, SOGO will perform
Mozart’s Toy Symphony at Saturday’s one-hour concert. Be sure to stick around
afterwards when you will have the chance to meet these enthusiastic musicians.

The Calvary Players, a theater group from Calvary Chapel of Olympia, will be
performing a vignette for children.  Director Tad Sowers will also narrate Peter and
the Wolf.
The Calvary Players have performed numerous times at the Washington
Center.

Performance at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 26 at the Washington Center.
Tickets are on sale now at the Washington Center Box Office, 360.753,8586.
Prices are $4.40 - 16.50, with children 8 and under free* with an adult.  (*Plus $2.50
Washington Center surcharge.)

1 in 5 Americans don’t know where their next meal is coming from—last year it was 1 in 8. With more than 250 orchestras representing all 50 states, Orchestras Feeding America 2009 was the single largest orchestra project serving communities nationwide, collecting over 200,000 pounds of food for local communities.

This year, we hope to do even better!

March 2010 is Orchestras Feeding America month and the need in our communities has never been greater.  The New York Times cited a recent Department of Agriculture study, saying, “The number of Americans who lived in households that lacked consistent access to adequate food soared last year to 49 million.” With the number of hungry Americans growing daily, we hope that you will join the ranks of orchestras making a difference in their communities.

Last year, with more than 250 orchestras representing all 50 states, Orchestras Feeding America was the single largest orchestra project serving communities nationwide, collecting over 200,000 pounds of food for local communities.  The League of Symphony Orchestras is proud to have been a part of this effort, and hope you are as inspired by the power of our numbers as we are.

Join SOGO in the elimination of hunger Sunday, March 28, 4 p.m. at the Washington Center.  Cash and non-perishable items will be collected for the Thurston County Food Bank.
