Fast Facts

  • SOGO musicians are not only talented musicians, hard working, very photogenic, and a lot of fun; they are academically talented too.

  • SOGO’s music theory and history program provides our musicians with a strong foundation in music education. Very few youth orchestras offer this important piece of music education to their musicians, but most college music departments expect freshman students to arrive with a basic knowledge of music theory.

  • There is no truth to the rumor that brass players tend to suffer from high blood pressure as adults because they are such hams.

  • More SOGO musicians than ever are getting a chance to perform in the community as part of ensembles.

  • Individual parts of each music score cost $5.00 or more to replace. At times a publisher won’t sell single parts and it is necessary to buy a whole set to be able to replace a missing part.

  • The hours that are spent at rehearsals and concerts represent only a fraction of the time that conductors and staff devote to SOGO. Based on their current stipends, their pay rate is less than $4 an hour. It’s a good thing they are dedicated and really love what they do – and have other sources of income.
