SOGO HISTORY
In August of 2000 two ambitious local high school music students, with the
help of other young musicians, their families and music teachers, created
SOGO. Ample energy and a fresh vision for building a student-led
organization make SOGO unique.
The first season, two orchestras were created and performed three concerts
each. Other performances
included the sold out SOGO HO HO Brass Choir holiday concert, a
free-to-the-public Messiah Sing-Along,
a Children’s Concert tour to local schools, and small ensembles performing
at the spring Arts Walk in
downtown Olympia.
SOGO PRESENT
Now in our ninth season, SOGO has over 130 young musicians from over 20
different schools in the South
Sound area. The concert season includes three performances in the
Washington Center, two holiday
concerts, a Children's Concert and Children’s Concert tour to rural low-income school
districts, and the Instrument Petting Zoo during the annual Olympia Spring
Arts
Walk.
SOGO members are involved in weekly full orchestra rehearsals including,
string and wind ensembles, brass choir, chamber music,
sectionals, music
history, theory and composition.
SOGO
PROGRAM
SOGO features a comprehensive and sequential program designed to grow
student abilities in sight-reading, basic to advanced instrument
pedagogy and musical artistry. These goals are achieved by playing
selections from the standard orchestral repertoire. Music is selected to
represent various genres, cultures and historical periods. Using this
quality literature, we focus on technique, rhythm, intonation, ensemble and
listening skills along with individual, section and orchestral sound
development. Music selections generally increase in difficulty as the
season
progresses and the foundations for good orchestral playing develop within
the individual and ensemble.

Conservatory Orchestra
The Conservatory Orchestra personnel are at the advanced high
school/collegiate ability level and focus on artistic
performance of the standard repertoire.
Academy Orchestra
The Academy
Orchestra personnel are at the advanced middle
school/intermediate high school ability level and focus
on leadership, training, education and preparatory work.
Debut Orchestra
The Debut Orchestra personnel are at the advanced elementary/intermediate
middle school ability level and focus
on training, education and preparatory work.
SOGO Auditions 2008-2009
Auditions ($25 non-refundable audition fee) - auditions are held at the
Allison home.
Call for appointment: 360.561.2080
Auditions are held in May of each academic year for placement in the
fall. Throughout the season auditions are accepted based on openings.
Musician is asked to prepare and perform a
solo or etude of their choice. Students are
encouraged to work with their
private instructor to
determine appropriate audition material for the solo
or etude. The live audition will conclude
with a sight reading piece to
determine each
musician’s skill in counting, key signature, technique and
musicianship. After the audition, musicians
are given a theory examination
that will
last approximately 20 minutes. There is a $20.00 non-refundable
audition fee due at the time of the
auditions in May. A $25.00
non-refundable
audition fee will be charged for auditions that take place at
other times of the year.
